Below 100 Intensive & Train-the-Trainer

Suffolk, VA | April 25, 2017 | VACP Trainings

Activity Image Presented by the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police in partnership with the Virginia Highway Safety Office.

The "Below 100 Program" is an initiative that aims to reduce line of duty deaths to below 100 per year — a number that has not been seen since 1943. In 1974, the all-time high year for officer deaths, 278 were killed in the line of duty. Innovations in training, emergency medicine and vehicles, as well as the development of ballistic armor, all contributed to bring this number down. We’ve averaged about 150 officers killed per year in the last ten years. Together, we can bring that number to below 100.

How many tragedies are assigned a proximate cause of “X,” when the root cause is actually fatigue? Rarely do we even ask the question, “How much sleep did the involved officer/deputy have in the last four days?”
