Job Description / Responsibilities

General Description of Duties:
The Assistant Director acts as Executive Director in his absence, making all decisions in accordance with Academy and the Executive Director's procedures and policies.  Supervises Academy Coordinators/ Administrative Staff and all aspects of Academy training and instruction.

Major Job Functions:
The following is a summary of the major essential functions of this job. The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below, and specific functions may change from time to time.

  • Supervises and evaluates coordinators and administrative staff. Conducts annual performance evaluations.  Conducts administrative investigations as needed.
  • Supervises and evaluates instructors on a daily basis. Reviews daily class evaluations.
  • Ensures compliance with Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) and Academy policies and regulations.
  • Writes and develops policies for the approval of the Executive Director.
  • Supervises and administers the Academy in the Executive Director’s absence.
  • Supervises Facilities management.
  • Supervises the Pre-Employment Program.
  • Conducts inspections at least semiannually to ensure lesson plans, files, and documentation are in compliance with DCJS and Academy directives and policies.
  • Teaches planned classes and fills in for absent instructors and coordinators, as needed.
  • Participates in community education and outreach.
  • Interacts and is active with all staff, students and guests.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

Salary and Benefits
The salary for this position is $55,000 to $65,000 range. Position offers an extensive benefits package, including comprehensive life and health insurance, vacation and sick leave accrual and a retirement benefits package.


Education and training: Associates or Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Business Administration or related field. A law enforcement, Corrections, or Communication/Dispatcher background in combination with experience may be used in lieu of a degree. Must have supervisory / management experience and experience in criminal justice training is preferred.

  • Excellent communication skills and able to interact with a diverse staff and stakeholders
  • Exceptional conflict resolution skills
  • Strong organizational abilities
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office – Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher
  • Able to succinctly express complex issues both orally and in writing
  • Must be able to participate in physical training with recruit classes

Working Conditions
This is a FLSA Exempt management position, primarily administrative in nature. However, the incumbent shall be able to participate in physical training and be able to be outdoors in all weather conditions. The incumbent will primarily work Monday through Friday, with occasional evening and weekend hours required.
