Job Description / Responsibilities

The City of Harrisonburg, VA (population approximately 53K) is currently recruiting for the position of Certified Police Officer. Applicants must hold a current Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) certification for Law Enforcement Officer.  A multi-phase review process will determine which applicants will be interviewed for possible hire. An eligibility list will be created from the review process.

$38,688.00 - $51,875.20 annually, commensurate with training and experience, plus an excellent benefits package that includes:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Certified Police Officer through Virginia DCJS.
  • Attend and successfully complete a physical agility testing. (Testing date TBD.)
  • High School Diploma or GED. College Degree or Military Experience preferred.
  • 21 years of age by July 1, 2018.
  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident Alien with an application for Naturalization filed and pending with Immigration Services.
  • Valid driver's license with good record.
  • Able to work 12-hour shift.  (6am - 6pm, 6pm - 6am, or 3pm - 3am).
  • Good physical condition.
  • Must live or be willing to move within a 30-mile radius of Harrisonburg, VA.

Special Requirements:
Successful applicants for this position will be subject to a DMV Motor Vehicle check and must complete a satisfactory credit history, drug screening, polygraph and criminal background check.

Physical Requirements:
This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and feeling; vocal communication is required for conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils. The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.

A physical agility test will be offered periodically as applications are received.  Applicants will be notified of testing dates as they are scheduled.  Applicants must bring proof of current Law Enforcement credentials (i.e. - department ID, badge or LEO certificate) to the testing.
