Job Description / Responsibilities

The City of Lexington Police Department is seeking applicants for the position of Virginia Certified Police Officer. Duties include enforcing the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia as well as Local City Ordinances. Applicants must pass a rigorous background investigation, polygraph, physical agility, drug screen, psychological examination and physical examination.

Salary & Benefits
Total Annual Salary range for Virginia Certified Officers is $36,417 – $50,291, plus an additional 3.5% shift differential pay for night shift.  The City of Lexington participates in the VRS (Virginia Retirement System) and offers a liberal fringe benefit package including up to 80% paid family health insurance, and paid leave.


Applicants must possess a Department of Criminal Justice Services Certification as a Sworn Law Enforcement Officer in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Candidates must be at least 21 years of age, and possess a high school diploma or equivalent (a college degree in criminal justice is desirable).

Candidates must also possess a valid Virginia’s driver’s license with a good driving record.

Residency requirement for Rockbridge County.
