Job Description / Responsibilities

The Town of South Hill Police Department is seeking Certified Law Enforcement Officers.

Duties include enforcing the Code of Virginia and ordinances of the Town of South Hill; investigating criminal activity; ensuring public safety; responding to radio dispatches; answering calls and complaints; interviewing victims, witnesses, and suspects; preparing a variety of reports; and courtroom testimony.

The typical annual starting salary range for the position is $33,280 to $39,241, depending on experience.

The Town of South Hill offers an excellent benefits package, to include VRS retirement and the hazardous duty supplement with the increased multiplier. Medical dental coverage, uniforms and equipment furnished, paid holidays, sick time, vacation, and a take home car for those living within 10 miles of town limits.



  • U.S. Citizen, at least 21 years of age;
  • High school graduate or possess a General Education Degree (G.E.D.);
  • Possess a valid Virginia’s Driver’s License; and,
  • Able to bend, stoop and lift items weighing 25 pounds and occasional lifting of items weighing 50 pounds or more.


  • Graduation/Certification from Basic Law Enforcement Training as a police officer in the Commonwealth of Virginia;
  • General knowledge of the geography of the Town of South Hill;
  • Ability to carry out verbal and written instructions;
  • Ability to firmly and tactfully deal with the public;
  • Analyze situations and adopt quick, effective course of action; and,
  • Skilled in the use of firearms and emergency vehicles.
