Job Description / Responsibilities

The City of Cambridge, MD is seeking an experienced professional with a demonstrated record of professional law enforcement experience, including leadership and management, a customer-service orientation, familiarity with municipal law enforcement, a commitment to community policing, understanding of modern police practices including technology, strong collaboration with other local law enforcement agencies, and respect and support for members of the Police department.

The City of Cambridge is a full-service city located in the Choptank River in Dorchester County Maryland. The population of is approx. 12,500. Cambridge is home to an historic downtown Main Street area, a Hyatt resort, waterfront park and Marina, and annual Iron Man events. Dorchester County features the Blackwater Wildlife Refuge, the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Monument, and extensive outdoor sports activities.  Cambridge is a city that values diversity and expects its Police Chief to serve as a community leader.  In 2015, the Council implemented a Charter Resolution establishing the Council/Manager form of government.  The City of Cambridge has 125 full-time permanent employees, and offers a full range of municipal services. The 2018 City Budget totals $20 million.

The City of Cambridge’s Police Department is made up of 48 sworn officers and 5 non-sworn employees with a budget of $4.8 million.  Cambridge’s Police Programs include:  Administration – including Community Policing, Patrol, and Special Operations – including criminal and narcotics investigation.  The Police Chief reports directly to the City Manager is considered part of the City management team.  

The Chief assumes overall responsibility for the planning, develop¬ment and direction of all programs, exercising a wide latitude of independent judgment and discretion within general policy guidelines.  The Chief has particular responsibility for police-community relations and for collaboration with other law enforcement agencies.  This position is Non-Classified, Exempt position reporting to the City Manager.

The hiring salary range is $53,064 – $98,382.  Starting salary will depend on experience and qualifications.


Candidates must possess:

  • At least seven years of police experience, five of which must be equivalent to Lieutenant or a higher level and demonstrated advance supervisory experience.
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Police Administration, Criminal Justice, Police Science, Public Administration or a related field is required. A Master Degree in the fore mentioned fields is preferred.  Graduation from the FBI National Academy satisfies the educational requirements.
  • Extensive knowledge of the principles and practices of modern police administration.
  • Thorough knowledge of the standards by which the quality of police operations is evaluated and of the use of police statistics and their application to police administration and future planning.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relation¬ships with police officers in a manner encouraging optimum perfor¬mance and high morale.
  • Ability to prepare and effectively present oral or written re¬ports on Departmental activities, budget requirements, and other regular and special reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relation¬ships with Federal, State, and local authorities, civic leaders, and the general public.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license in the State of Maryland, or ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment.
