Job Description / Responsibilities

The Town of River Bend, North Carolina, is currently seeking qualified applicants for the position of Chief of Police. River Bend is a vibrant, progressive, and growing community with a population of 3,100 located near historic New Bern, North Carolina in Craven County and within a one-hour drive to area beaches. River Bend has a Council–Manager form of government, with a Mayor and five Council members.

The Police Department provides service twenty-four hours per day, seven days a week with six full-time officers, one part-time officer, and unpaid reserve officers. The Chief of Police is a "working Chief.” The Chief of Police is hired by, and reports directly to the Town Manager. The Department has a current operating budget of $503,000.

The pay range is $53,366—$69,030 with the starting salary dependent on qualifications. An employment profile and more information about River Bend is available online at www.riverbendnc.org.

Qualifications

Candidates for the position are preferred to have at least ten years of overall law enforcement experience, with five years of strong technical and command or supervisory level law enforcement experience. Other requirements include: a strong commitment to community-oriented policing; excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communications skills; the ability to relate to elected officials, Town staff, citizens, and other law enforcement officials; thorough knowledge of federal, state, and municipal ordinances related to law enforcement.

A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Criminal Justice, Public or Business Administration, or a related field and a Graduate Degree in a similar field is preferred; an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered. Advanced training through the Southern Police Institute or the FBI National Academy is a plus.

Possession of, or meets the requirements to obtain, the Advanced Law Enforcement certificate from Standards and Training Council of North Carolina. Residency within ten miles of Town is required within one year of hiring date.
