Job Description / Responsibilities

Performs responsible protective service work involving a variety of general or support duty police assignments; does related work as required. Work is frequently performed under emergency situations and involves considerable personal hazard and danger. Work is performed under regular supervision.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Enforcing laws; investigating criminal activity; ensuring safety of public; testifying in court; maintaining records and files; preparing reports.
  • On an assigned shift, operates a patrol vehicle or walks to observe for violations of traffic laws, suspicious activities or persons and disturbances of law and order;
  • Responds to radio dispatches and answers calls and complaints;
  • Enforces traffic laws; issues citations for traffic violations;
  • Serves warrants and makes arrests, maintains warrant records, testifies in court;
  • Provides police escorts, directs traffic; performs residential and commercial checks;
  • Fills out arrest records, fingerprints, photographs, etc.; performs prisoner security functions; investigates traffic accidents;
  • Reports unsafe conditions existing in street or other public facilities;
  • Assists with criminal investigations, conducts stakeouts, assists with the installation of surveillance equipment; Interviews victims and witnesses; performs property and evidence duties;
  • Prepares detailed reports on activities and assignments;
  • Participates in a variety of in-service training programs;
  • May be assigned to a specialized unit or task force such as crime prevention, special duty, special operations, technical support or investigation operations;
  • Performs related tasks as required.

Qualifications

Applicants must be 21 years of age, have any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen and have no criminal record., and be able to obtain a Virginia Operator’s License.

General knowledge of police methods, practices and procedures; general knowledge of the geography of the Town and location of important buildings; general knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Police Department; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to prepare clear comprehensive reports; ability to deal courteously, firmly and tactfully with the public; ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective and reasonable courses of action with due regard to surround hazards and circumstances; possession of physical agility and endurance; skill in the use of firearms and the operation of a motor vehicle.

Salary Range
$16.51 - $26.42 Hourly
$34,340.80 - $54,953.60 Annually

Benefits
Health Insurance - Health Insurance is available to full-time employees who work a regular schedule of at least 40 hours per week. Three medical plans are available from Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield: KeyAdvantage 250 (PPO), KeyAdvantage 500 (PPO), and a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP). Dental coverage, vision coverage, and a prescription drug programs are included with each medical plan. The Health Insurance program is designed to protect employees and their families from the high cost of medical and dental care. Eligibility: Newly hired employees shall be eligible for coverage 30-days from their hire date, provided that the employee has paid the employee portion of the health insurance
premium.

Section 125 Flexible Benefits Plan - The Section 125 Flexible Benefits Plan allow employees to choose from a menu of qualified benefits with the cost of selected benefit(s) such as health insurance coverage, child or dependent care, medical expense reimbursements, and supplemental insurance, paid on a pretax basis. Permanent status employees are eligible for this benefit as of their date of hire.

Supplemental Insurance - The Town of Culpeper offers payroll deductions for employees who voluntarily elect to participate in a cancer, disability, accident and/or supplemental life insurance policies with approved vendors.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP) - This employer-paid program provides confidential and professional short-term counseling and assistance for employees and members of their household on a wide range of personal problems, including alcoholism, drug abuse, emotional problems, marriage and family problems, financial, and legal problems. Employees and members of their household are eligible to
participate in this program as of their date of hire. Participation in the medical insurance program is not required to use the EAP.

Virginia Retirement System Pension - Full-time employees are eligible for this benefit provided through the Virginia Retirement System (VRS). VRS provides eligible members a retirement benefit for life, as well as offerings for survivor benefits. If a member becomes permanently disabled, disability retirement is available. Details of benefits offered by VRS, eligibility requirements and member responsibilities are described in further detail in the VRS Member Handbook.

Life Insurance - Full-time employees are eligible for this Employer paid benefit provided through the Virginia Retirement System (VRS) via Minnesota Life Insurance. Members are covered under the group
life insurance plan from their date of hire. Coverage is two times your annual salary for a natural death. Accidental death and dismemberment benefits are four times your annual salary. Employees may
purchase additional life insurance coverage for themselves, spouse and dependent children.

Deferred Compensation Retirement Accounts - Town of Culpeper employees have access to 457(b) pretax retirement accounts. Employees are eligible to participate in these IRS-approved methods for
deferring federal and state income taxes on savings until retirement. Participants have the opportunity to select and combine investments in order to carefully construct a supplemental retirement plan that most effectively protects and builds their retirement dollars. Employees are eligible to participate as of their date of hire.

Paid Leave - Town of Culpeper employees accrue both annual and sick leave on a monthly basis. The accrual rate is based on length of service.

Holidays - The Town observes 12 paid holidays for full-time employees.

Credit Union - Employees and members of their immediate families are eligible to participate in the Northern Piedmont Federal Credit Union. This provides members with the option of a payroll deduction
method for saving money.
