Job Description / Responsibilities

Salisbury NC Police are accepting applications for lateral officer. SPD is a full service police department with CID, SRO, Community Services, SRT, and K9 positions.  

Responsibilities include but are not limited to: enforcing North Carolina General Statutes, working closely with neighborhood groups, preparing and presenting court testimony, and writing clear and concise incident reports. Excellent opportunity for advancement and career development. 

Salary & Benefits

  • Base hiring pay – $34,223.
  • After one year – 5% increase to $35,935.
  • 1% longevity bonus.
  • Sign-on bonus:
    • Prior NC law enforcement service with current BLET — $5,000 after six months employment.
    • Prior OUT-OF-STATE law enforcement service — $3000 after six months employment, $2000 at time of passing abbreviated BLET.
      Out-of-state certifications are recognized by North Carolina with some restrictions.

Lateral Transfers:
The formula for calculating increased base pay for law enforcement experience, no matter state of certification, is:

  • Base salary, plus 1% for each year of service. Up to 20 years of credible law enforcement service, so someone could be brought in as much as 20% higher than entry level officers.
  • Educational Incentives:
    • Associate’s degree - $1000 added to base pay
    • Bachelor’s degree - $2000 added to base pay
    • Master’s Degree - $2500 added to base pay
  • Bilingual Pay: 2.5% added to base pay
  • Career Development Incentives:
    • When an officer reaches 18 months service, after a written test they can be elevated to Police Officer 2 with a 5% pay increase from Police Officer based pay.
    • When an officer reaches 5 years of service, after a written test they can be elevated to Master Officer with a 5% pay increase from Police Officer 2
    • When an officer reaches the rank of Master Officer, several are chosen as fill in supervisors with a rank of Corporal, which adds 2.5% to the base pay of Master Officer.
  • Take Home Vehicle with restrictions to inside county.


The applicant must be at least 20 years of age, be a U.S. citizen, have a high school diploma or equivalent, possess a valid N.C. driver’s license or the ability to obtain, and have no felony convictions. Cannot have been convicted of DUI, DWI, or certain misdemeanors.
