Job Description / Responsibilities


  • Responsible for the department’s public information program, including both internal and external communications, media relations and social media platforms.
  • Maintain liaison with area departments to provide an exchange of information for use in investigations of criminal activity
  • Responsible for compiling, analyzing and disseminating information for public and departmental use
  • Responds to queries from the community, including media, the public, town officials and members of the department
  • Advises, assists and prepares members of the department for interaction with the community, including media. Coordinates interviews of personnel by members of the community and media
  • Performs related work as required

8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

$50,692 - $86,915 DOQ

Herndon Police Department, 397 Herndon Parkway


  • Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to the following: Bachelor’s degree in communication, journalism, public relations or related field or law enforcement related field

  • Three years as a media communications professional, first responder communicator, or related law enforcement experience including at least two years of social media experience

  • Proficient in Microsoft programs including: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and Outlook. Basic proficiency in computer graphics and/or desktop publishing. Some training in, or understanding of, basic statistical analysis.

  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving records
