The Newport News Police Foundation was created to provide resources to the Newport News Police Department which are not readily available from traditional funding resources. As such the Foundation supports professional development, technology and equipment purchases, wellness and morale programs, and community outreach efforts of the Police Department.

The Foundation contacted Canon Virginia, Inc. about financial or in kind support. Canon, Inc. offered to donate cameras and lenses valued at approximately $69,000 to the Police Department. The equipment includes 350 Powershot cameras, 20 Rebel T3 cameras, 10 telephoto zoom lenses and one video camera.

On Wednesday, January 23, 2012, Chief James D. Fox accepted delivery of the equipment from Canon Virginia at Police Headquarters.

“Canon Virginia’s camera donation to the Newport News Police Department honors all law enforcement officers for their dedication and service to our city,” said Toru Nishizawa, President and CEO of Canon Virginia, Inc. “We are very proud to call the Virginia Peninsula home for more than 26 years and giving back to the community is a top priority for us.  There is nothing more rewarding than knowing our contributions and involvement with the Newport News PoliceDepartment will contribute to keeping our employees and community safe.”

“This is a prime example of a government/corporate partnership and of a company responding to the needs of its police department,” said Chief Fox.  “Canon is a major corporate presence in the City and understands the importance of a safe city for its employees to live, work and play.  The cameras will be used by our officers as they go about protecting the community and will provide a valuable resource in our crime fighting efforts. The Department is extremely grateful for Canon Virginia’s generous contribution.”
