David Sloggie Appointed Williamsburg’s Chief of Police

Williamsburg City Manager Jack Tuttle announced today that he has appointed David C. Sloggie as Chief of Police for the City, effective May 29, 2010. Sloggie has served as Deputy Police Chief since 1996 and succeeds Mike Yost, who retires in May.
A native of Newport News, Sloggie has served 33 years on the Williamsburg Police Department, including thirteen years as Deputy Chief of Police and fourteen years as Uniform Bureau Major. He was instrumental in the early phases of the police department becoming an accredited agency. Sloggie was also an assessor for the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc., in 1992-93. (CALEA®), which selected the Williamsburg Police Department to be a Flagship Agency in 2009.
“I am honored, humbled and feel privileged to be selected as the next Chief of Police of the City of Williamsburg,” said Sloggie. “Chief Yost has raised the bar by leading us in becoming a Flagship Agency, and it will now become my duty to continue that legacy and strive to improve upon it. I will do so with enthusiasm as I look forward to the challenges ahead.” In addition to his experience as a police officer, Sloggie received a Certificate in Corrections and an AAS in Police Science from Thomas Nelson Community College and a BA & AA in Criminology from Saint Leo College. He received his MPA in Justice Administration from Golden Gate University, and this semester he completes a two-year Graduate Certificate Program in Local Government Management from Virginia Tech. Throughout his career, Sloggie has committed himself to pursuing opportunities for continual training and professional development, including graduating from the FBI National Academy; the United States Secret Service’s Dignitary Protection School; and Police Executive Leadership School, Jepson School of Leadership at the University of Richmond. “Dave Sloggie epitomizes the best qualities of an effective Chief of Police: exceptional education, training and experience, combined with a dedication to the highest standards of ethics, integrity, community interaction and professional conduct,” said Jack Tuttle, Williamsburg City Manager. “He has devoted his entire career to protecting the safety of Williamsburg’s citizens, students, and visitors, and we can all feel confident with Dave at the helm.” Sloggie is a member of the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police and the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP). He received IACP’s Lifetime Membership Award in 2003. Sloggie lives in Williamsburg with his wife, Maureen. They have four children: Jennifer in Virginia, Beach; Megan in Newport News; Angela in Williamsburg; and Raymond in New York.
