March 15 Is Deadline for Transportation Safety Grant Applications

RICHMOND - DMV's Virginia Highway Safety Office (VAHSO) is accepting applications to support programs throughout Virginia that strive to reduce traffic deaths and injuries. The deadline for transportation safety grant submissions is March 15, 2010.
The funding period for approved applications is October 1, 2010 through September 30, 2011. Applicants selected for the program participate on a cost-reimbursement basis. Interested applicants are required to make submissions online. To receive access to the online application, applicants should contact the project monitor assigned to their area. Visit http://www.dmv.virginia.gov/webdoc/safety/resources/contacts.pdf for a list of project monitors. Project monitors can answer specific questions about the guidelines for grant applications. Applications must support Virginia's primary transportation safety goal of reducing the number of deaths and serious injuries resulting from traffic crashes. Programs receiving grant funds work toward increasing safety belt and child seat usage, deterring aggressive and drunk driving, and promoting awareness of motorcycle safety, and the risks for teen and senior drivers. The VAHSO is responsible for administering the funds and has established measurable objectives for each of the nearly 300 grant requests awarded each year. Future funding requests are determined by the measurable progress toward these established performance objectives. The Board of Transportation Safety, with 12 members appointed by the Governor, recommends approval of the grant applications. Some examples of previously-funded grant programs are:- Click It or Ticket, a safety belt enforcement mobilization operated by the Virginia State Police and local law enforcement
- Operation Air, Land and Speed, an enforcement effort conducted periodically on Virginia's highways through a partnership between State Police and the Department of Transportation
- Checkpoint Strikeforce, an enforcement and media effort aimed at reducing drunk driving administered by the non-profit organization WRAP (Washington Regional Alcohol Program)
