Napolitano wants investigation into release of man charged in Va. nun’s death

August 3, 2010 | Virginia News

Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano this evening ordered an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding the release from detention of a Prince William County man charged in a fatal Sunday collision that killed a Benedictine nun and injured two others.

"DHS regrets the tragic loss of life in Prince William County this weekend. Secretary Napolitano has ordered an immediate review into the circumstances leading to this individual being released in 2008," DHS spokesman Matt Chandler said in a press release. Prince William authorities have said that Carlos A. Martinelly Montano, 23, is an undocumented, Bolivian native who had been held for deportation but for unexplained reasons was released in 2008. Prince William Commonwealth's Attorney Paul B. Ebert said today that federal authorities generally have not considered persons convicted of driving under the influence to be major targets for deportation. External Link to Article
