Norfolk captain named city’s new police chief

Police Capt. Mike Goldsmith will be the city's new police chief, City Manager Marcus Jones announced today at a press conference at City Hall.

"I'm both humbled and honred to be selected ofor this position," Goldsmith said at the press conference.

Goldsmith joined the Norfolk Police Department in 1989. He has a master’s in business administration from The College of William and Mary and master’s degree in applied sociology from Old Dominion University.

The announcement follows a search that yielded about 80 applicants.

Sharon Chamberlin, formerly the senior assistant chief, became acting chief in March 2011 following the retirement of Bruce P. Marquis. She has remained acting chief and was one of the applicants for the chief’s job.

Goldsmith's salary as chief will be $131,000.

He has lived in Norfolk since 1977.
