Perkins named Roanoke’s new police chief

Chris Perkins, an 18-year Roanoke police veteran who had been the city's acting police chief for the last 3 1/2 months, was named the new top cop today by the city manager.

Perkins, 40, is the fourth Roanoke chief in 43 years. He succeeds Joe Gaskins, who retired June 30.

Perkins, a city police officer since 1992, invokes community and technology in his brand of crime-fighting -- qualifications City Manager Chris Morrill said he was seeking in the next chief.

"We are so fortunate to have someone like chris perkins who has come up through the ranks and knows the community," Morrill said today at a news conference at police headquarters. Perkins "has also taken every opportunity to improve his skills."
