Special Olympics Virginia Torch Run
The Virginia Law Enforcement Torch Run is one of a nationwide series of relay runs by law enforcement officers to increase public awareness and raise funds for Special Olympics. The Special Olympics Flame of Hope is carried more than 1,900 miles across the Commonwealth to Richmond each year in June to open the Summer Games.
The Law Enforcement Torch Run is Special Olympics’ largest grass-roots fundraiser and public awareness vehicle, raising nearly $950,000 annually in Virginia and over $34 million worldwide. At its most basic level, the Torch Run involves officers and athletes carrying the “Flame of Hope” to the Opening Ceremonies of Special Olympics competitions and to extend the message of Special Olympics even further into their communities, teaching the lessons of acceptance and inclusion.
Presented by SunTrust & Enterprise Rent-a-Car and supported by the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police, the Virginia Sheriff’s Association, the Virginia Department of Corrections, the Virginia Association of Regional Jails, and the Virginia Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators this bond extends the boundaries of a department and unites officers in the region, throughout the Commonwealth and around the world.
