We’ve moved!

On Friday, July 11, the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police (VACP) and the Virginia Police Chiefs Foundation (VPCF) completed the move into a new suite of offices down the hall from our previous home of six years. There is still much unpacking and organizing to do, but we will be back in business Monday, July 14.

2007 National & Virginia Law Enforcement Challenge Winners Announced

VA Tops List of Winners of the National Law Enforcement Challenge

Nineteen Virginia agencies will be recognized at the IACP Annual Conference in San Diego, November 11, 2008 — the most national winners of any other state! A total of 520 applications were submitted to the National Challenge this year, 52 entries from Virginia alone.

Virginia Challenge winners will be recognized at the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police Annual Conference at The Homestead in August.

Legislative Report: Biennial IACP Day on the Hill

On March 4, IACP members participated in the Day on the Hill in Washington, D.C. Held in conjunction with the midyear meetings of both the Division of State and Provincial Police and the Division of State Associations of Chiefs of Police, the event allowed IACP members the opportunity to meet with their elected officials on issues of importance to the law enforcement community.

In meetings with congressional representatives, IACP members called for an end to budget cuts for state, tribal, and local law enforcement agencies and for the restoration of full funding to various programs. IACP members also discussed immigration; illegal firearms sales; the FISA Amendments Act; and retroactive new, lower sentencing guidelines on individuals convicted of crack cocaine offenses.

Goodman to head Ashland Police

The Ashland Police Department has announced that Captain Doug Goodman will take over as Chief of Police July 1. Ashland Interim Police Chief, Tom Clark will retire on that date as well.

The Ten Deadly Errors of Leadership

Many officers, looking back several years to their basic academy days, can still remember officer survival classes that highlighted the “10 deadly errors” an officer can make. Any of these errors can lead to the death, or serious injury, of law enforcement officers or their partners. Regardless of how they were presented, these errors are clearly based on the model established originally by Pierce Brooks.
