Through the combined efforts of the Amherst County Department of Public Safety, the Amherst County Sheriff’s Office and the Town of Amherst Police Department, a new Command/Crime Scene Unit has been added to the county’s fleet of law enforcement and public safety vehicles.Amherst County Sheriff Jimmy Ayers said that while the new vehicle belongs to the three parties, it will be made available to any regional agency needing it.

Richmond teens will work for department while earning degreeFor the next three years, the cadets, ages 17 and 18, will work for the Richmond Police Department in a civilian capacity while attending school at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College and Virginia Commonwealth University, earning degrees in criminal justice.
After their third year and once they reach the age of 21, the cadets will be prepared to enter an abbreviated version of the police academy that could have them on the streets as sworn officers in a matter of weeks. The cadets will be expected to serve at least two years as Richmond police officers.
