Lynchburg police chief announces retirement

Lynchburg Police Chief Charles Bennett announced his retirement this morning during a press conference at City Hall. Bennett’s retirement will be effective May 1.His future plans are undecided, although he said he was in talks with the federal government about possibly taking on a “challenging overseas assignment.” He declined to elaborate, saying he would make a formal announcement sometime after New Year's Day.

For nearly eight years, Waynesboro Police Officer Jessie Shaver patrolled local streets with the department’s only four-legged officer - Kizmet.The German shepherd was just as much local celebrity as he was Shaver’s partner in justice chasing down drugs and suspects.
“Kizmet more than paid his salary in his nose,” Waynesboro Chief Doug Davis said Tuesday.
The K9 died of cancer in September, meaning that a new furry officer has to step in and take over the job.

Waynesboro Police Officer Mark Kearney’s literacy effort in the Waynesboro Schools reached a milestone on Monday when he passed out to students the 10,000th book, donated by Townsend Press.Kearney, the founder of The Book ’Em literary festival, has been issuing books, including nonfiction and those from Townsend Press’ Bluford Series novels, for the past several years.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - San Francisco supervisors have OK'd a program to give ID cards to illegal immigrants.San Francisco's ID program is patterned after one in New Haven, Connecticut, and is designed to help people get access to services and feel safe dealing with police. New York and Miami are considering plans, but San Francisco is the largest city to have ID for illegal immigrants.
