Bill on concealed guns in eateries advances

Permit holders could have hidden weapons but would not be allowed to drink

Virginians would be able to belly up to the bar while packing hidden heat under a bill that easily passed a House of Delegates committee yesterday.

Senate Bill 476, which would allow concealed-weapons permit holders to bring firearms into restaurants, drew opposition from the Virginia Hospitality and Travel Association, the Virginia State Police and the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control on behalf of the Kaine administration, but gun owners prevailed.

Manassas to hear presentation on ICE

The Manassas city council will hear a detailed presentation on Feb. 25 concerning the memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Department of Homeland Security on the subject of the Immigration & Customs Enforcement 287(g) program.

Immediately after the presentation, the council will likely vote on whether to authorize police Chief John Skinner to sign the MOU. The version being submitted to DHS, which would still have to approve it, will serve as a broad-ranging tool to fight illegal immigrant criminal activity in the city.

At session’s midpoint, balancing budget is top issue

RICHMOND, Va. – Balancing a state budget thrown out of whack by a softening national economy and tepid revenue collections is the biggest challenge facing legislators at the procedural midpoint of the 2008 General Assembly.

Gov. Timothy M. Kaine delivered revised revenue projections and proposed budget cuts to legislators Tuesday, just five days before the Senate and House money committees must produce their respective versions of the state's two-year spending plan.

Citing Profiling Worries, Prince William Co. Chief Seeks Cameras in Police Cars

The Prince William County police chief said yesterday that the county should install video cameras in patrol cars to help protect officers from allegations of racial profiling as they enforce the county's crackdown on illegal immigration.

Chief Charlie T. Deane told the Board of County Supervisors during its regular weekly meeting that cameras would help paint a picture of "what really happened and what was really said" in the field. Cameras create visual evidence, shield officers from complaints and serve as training tools, he said.
