New numbers say 2007 was one of the deadliest years for law enforcement officers nationwide in more than a decade.The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund and Concerns of Police Survivors data report recently counted the deaths of 186 officers. That's up from 145 last year. However, Virginia had only two law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty this year. Ten were killed in Virginia last year.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - San Francisco supervisors have OK'd a program to give ID cards to illegal immigrants.San Francisco's ID program is patterned after one in New Haven, Connecticut, and is designed to help people get access to services and feel safe dealing with police. New York and Miami are considering plans, but San Francisco is the largest city to have ID for illegal immigrants.
Police consider ‘meth gun’ to find drugs

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Police are hopeful a handheld device an Arizona company says can detect methamphetamine with the click of a button will provide them with a new investigative tool, but some lawyers already are raising concerns.The meth scanner is being evaluated by law enforcement agencies in Missouri and Arizona. Tucson-based CDEX, the manufacturer, also plans tests on different types of meth in the next four weeks.
Florida Criminals Target Police for Weapons

Criminals are going after cops — for their guns. In the past year, gang members, thieves and drug dealers in Palm Beach County have broken into at least six police cars and stolen handguns and shotguns, officials say."This shows how brazen they are," Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said.
Realizing they, too, can be victims, the Sheriff's Office and other agencies are fighting back by adding burglar alarms to marked and unmarked cruisers, installing extra gun locks in cars and enforcing rules that bar off-duty storage of handguns, shotguns and assault rifles in car.

Particularly troubling has been the 51 percent jump, from 39 to 59, in the number of officers who have been shot and killed.
GM OnStar System Could Halt Stolen Cars

Starting with about 20 models for 2009, the service will be able to slowly halt a car that is reported stolen, and the radio may even speak up and tell the thief to pull over because police are watching.
