Secretary Chertoff, Acting Attorney General Keisler, Chief Lanier help commemorate 1991 dedication of national monument to fallen officers
Through the first nine months of 2007, officer deaths are up sharply nationwide, from 107 in 2006 to 141 this year, an increase of almost one-third. Particularly troubling has been the 51 percent jump, from 39 to 59, in the number of officers who have been shot and killed.
