Va. coalition considers what authority exists or should be requested
A new coalition of local governments aiming to address illegal immigration signaled yesterday it might explore whether officials are barred from asking the legal status of schoolchildren. The group also may consider pushing for more authority from the state to address crowding in homes.
Representatives from a dozen localities around Virginia gathered in Culpeper yesterday for the coalition's initial meeting. More than 20 localities have joined the coalition or expressed interest in working together to look at the issues, learn from one another and possibly seek changes through the General Assembly.
