Stafford Deputy Killed In Crash
October 20, 2007 | Virginia News
The VACP is saddened to report the death of 24-year-old Stafford County Sheriff’s Deputy Jason Edward Mooney, who was killed in a crash on Interstate 95 late Friday.
Deputy Mooney was following an ambulance en route to the scene of a car crash, when he apparently lost control near the courthouse about 10:25 p.m. and ran off the road, police said. Rescue workers tried to revive the deputy, but he was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital, according to police.
The VACP requests that Virginia law enforcement officers shroud their badges from now until the conclusion of memorial services in honor of Deputy Mooney.
Deputy Mooney had been with the Sheriff's Office for about 18 months. Before that, he was a Marine who served in Iraq. "The Stafford County Sheriff's Office has suffered a great loss," Sheriff Charles Jett said. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, his fiancée and his many friends. Jason was committed to public service. Jason was not only a sheriff's deputy but was also a volunteer fireman. He will be greatly missed."
Mooney had been with the Sheriff's Office for a year and a half. Before that, he was a Marine who served in Iraq.

UPDATE from Stafford County Sheriff Charlie Jett:
"The size of the church will necessitate limiting the number of reserved seats for law enforcement personnel. We are sensitive to the wish of so many law enforcement personnel wanting to attend Deputy Mooney's funeral and will greatly appreciate the presence of so many of you on Thursday. The church site will be able to accommodate everyone coming, even if it may entail standing or viewing the service from the church center on closed circuit television. Reserved seating, however, will only be available for Police Chiefs and Sheriffs, or their high-ranking representative.
"I appreciate your understanding the need to restrict the number of reserved seating. I also understand the wish of Deputy Mooney's family to have his service at their home church. Thank you in advance for your presence tomorrow. Your support in the recent days is very much appreciated."
