NBC12 spoke with Donna Michaelis, Director of Virginia's Center for School & Campus Safety, and Mike Rodgers of Critical Response Group about Virginia's digital mapping grant program for K-12 schools. The funding helps school systems to create accurate, operational digital maps of school facilities to ensure collaborative communication among first responders during critical incidents and to enable better, faster decision-making. Approximately 25% of school systems have already inquired about the funding. Legislation passed in 2022 requiring all schools in Virginia to have updated maps. The law is effective July 1, 2022.
