VACP Past President Chief (Ret) Harry T. Haskins Passes Away

Chief (Ret) Harry Haskins served on the VACP Executive Board for 7 years, culminating in a term as President (1984-1985).


The VACP and the Salem Police Department mourns the loss of retired Chief Harry T. Haskins, who passed away Sunday, September 1, 2024.  He was Salem's Chief of Police for two decades.

Chief Haskins began his law enforcement career with the Virginia State Police serving from July 1958 to July 1974. He then accepted a position as Special Agent with the U.S. Forest Service from July 1974 to November 1975. In the fall of 1975, he accepted the Chief's position at the Salem Police Department, where he proudly served the Salem community from November 1975 until his retirement on December 31, 1995.

Chief Haskins graduated from old Clifton Forge High School and earned an associate degree from Virginia Western Community College and later a Bachelor of Art Degree from Roanoke College. He is also a graduate of the 104th Session of the FBI National Academy. 

During his tenure as Chief, he was a founding member of Cardinal Criminal Justice Academy, where he served as Chairman of the Governing Council from 1983 to 1993. In addition, Chief Haskins served seven years on the Executive Committee of the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police, to include a term as President from 1984 to 1985.
