After a nationwide search, the City of Winchester named Ronnie Lewis its new Chief of Police today.
WINCHESTER, VA—After a nationwide search, the City of Winchester named Ronnie Lewis its new Chief of Police today. Mr. Lewis comes to the City with over 28 years of experience in law enforcement and public safety, including extensive expertise in leading complex organizations, community policing, community relations, and risk management. Mr. Lewis served as the Chief of Police in Bedford, Virginia, and has worked his way up the ranks, starting as a Patrol Officer with the City of Fairfax Police Department.

“After many interviews, consultations, and conversations with partners and stakeholders, Ronnie stood out among all the applicants,” said City Manager Dan Hoffman. “He brings decades of experience to this role and has a strong track record of success as the Chief of Police in Bedford. We are thrilled to have Ronnie on board and look forward to him leading our Police Department and working closely with the community to enhance public safety in Winchester.”

As Chief of Police, Mr. Lewis led the Bedford Police Department's transformation into one of Virginia's most effective law enforcement agencies by attracting qualified talent, upgrading technology, innovating community policing practices, and boosting residents' faith in the Department. On his watch, residents, local government officials, and other law enforcement agencies consistently praised the Bedford Police Department for achieving an impressive reduction in crime while treating all community members with dignity and respect.

“I am honored to have the opportunity to serve the people of Winchester as their Police Chief,” said Ronnie Lewis. “My goal is simple: to make the City a safe place for residents, visitors, and businesses. I am committed to leading an efficient, well-managed Police Department that Winchester residents can be proud of.”

The process to hire Winchester's next Police Chief was strenuous, incorporating numerous one-on-one and panel interviews, background checks, resident focus groups, and community feedback. The City of Winchester thanks residents for their cooperation and patience during the selection process.
