Passing of Retired Blacksburg Chief William “Bill” Brown

Chief (Ret) Bill Brown served on the VACP Executive Board in the early 2000s and was First Vice President when he retired in 2006.

It is with a heavy heart that Blacksburg Police Department acknowledges the passing of retired Chief of Police William “Bill” H. Brown.

After serving his country in Vietnam, Chief Brown became the first African American police officer in the New River Valley in 1970. He rose through the police department ranks and, after attending the FBI National Academy in Quantico Virginia, he was appointed Chief of Police in 1994.

Brown led the department with integrity, honesty, and respect through his retirement in 2006. He served on the VACP Executive Board for several years and was First Vice President when he retired. After retiring, Chief Brown served on the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors from 2008 through 2015; he was the Board Chair in 2014 and 2015.

Chief Brown's service to the community, especially the Blacksburg police department, will be remembered for generations to come.
