Retired Buena Vista Police Chief Lewis Plogger passes away
It is with great sadness we report that retired Buena Vista Chief of Police Lewis Edward Plogger passed away on Wednesday October 3, 2018 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Chief Plogger – a Buena Vista native and Parry McCluer High School graduate – began his law enforcement career as a City of Buena Vista patrolman on July 10, 1970. Chief Plogger was assigned to Investigations in April of 1972 and promoted to shift Lieutenant in January 1974. He was named Assistant Chief of Police on June 1, 1985 by Chief Erskine Campbell, who was grooming Plogger to be his successor. Assistant Chief Plogger was promoted to Police Chief in 1990.
Chief Plogger led the Buena Vista Police Department for a total of 27 years. He retired from the city on August 31, 2007. Always being involved with the city, Chief Plogger was a members of Buena Vista City Council for over 5 years.
During his retirement years, Chief Plogger spent time working around the house and crafting his woodworking skills becoming an expert clock builder and carpenter.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mary Ellen (Byers); his son, Corporal Christopher Ryan Plogger who currently works for Buena Vista Police Department as a canine handler; and grandson Eli, who Pops loved deeply.
The Chief – as he is known around town – will be missed by the whole community. He knew everyone and everyone knew him.
