Merricks named Altavista Police Chief

Altavista's Town Manager has named Thomas “Tommy” Merricks as the new Chief of the Altavista Police Department.

Altavista's Town Manager has named Thomas "Tommy" Merricks as the new Chief of the Altavista Police Department.

Chief Merricks will join the Altavista team on September 3, 2018. 

Mr. Merricks brings 28 year of comprehensive law enforcement experience working for the Danville Police Department. 

He has held the ranks of Officer, SWAT Commander, Detective (SID & CID), Lieutenant, and mostly recently Captain overseeing the Street Crimes Unit.  

Mr. Merricks has a Bachelor's degree in Business from Averett University.

In addition he has attended the Institute for Leadership in Changing Times (ILCT), and the Professional Executive Leadership School (PELS).

"I am extremely proud to be bringing Chief Merricks onboard to lead our force in providing the utmost level of safety and service to our great community," said Town Manager, Waverly Coggsdale.  "His vast experience and knowledge will provide a tremendous benefit to our exceptional police department." 

The Altavista Police Department includes a great group of professionals and Chief Merrick's work contributions and experience will add to the success of the department's future. 

In his new position, the Chief will oversee 12 sworn officers and 1 civilian employee, with an annual budget of $1.15 million.
