DRIVE SMART Virginia Executive Director Janet Brooking Receives 2019 VACP President's Award

Director Brooking recognized for her tireless efforts to raise awareness about distracted driving and champion legislative initiatives that focus on occupant protection and distracted driving.

Each year, the President of the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police & Foundation (VACP) selects an individual for the President's Award to recognize their meritorious efforts on behalf of the law enforcement profession and Virginia's criminal justice system. This year, 2018-19 VACP President Chief Douglas Goodman (Ashland) recognized Janet Brooking, the Executive Director of DRIVE SMART Virginia.  The award was presented to Director Brooking at the VACP Annual Conference Opening Ceremonies on August 26, 2019 in Norfolk.

Janet Brooking has served as the Executive Director of DRIVE SMART Virginia since May, 2005.  During that time, Janet has been tireless in her efforts to raise awareness about distracted driving and traffic safety through public education, media campaigns and training programs.  She has worked closely with the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police to champion legislative initiatives that focus on occupant protection and distracted driving.  She continues to work for the passage of improved laws that eliminate the dangerous activity of texting while driving. Janet is the catalyst behind Drive Smart Virginia's Annual Distracted Driving Summit, which brings law enforcement together with traffic safety advocates and experts to explore best practices in reducing traffic fatalities caused by distracted drivers.

Janet received her Bachelor of Science degree from Mary Baldwin College and her Certificate in Philanthropy from the University of Richmond. She is also a graduate of the Virginia Collaborative Leaders Program through the Institute for Educational Leadership, The Sorensen Institute for Political Leadership at the University of Virginia, and the Center for Creative Leadership.  She is currently on the Advisory Board of Visitors at Mary Baldwin College and is past President of the American Society of Safety Engineers, Colonial Chapter.
