Police Officer Testing
The City of Harrisonburg will be offering Police Officer testing on Saturday, September 21, 2019 at the Harrisonburg Police Department.  

Minimum Requirements for Police Officer
  • High School Diploma or GED. College Degree or Military Experience, preferred.
  • 21 years of age by completion of basic law enforcement academy.
  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident Alien with an application for Naturalization filed and pending with Immigration Services, if DCJS-approved.
  • Valid driver's license with good record.
  • Able to work 12-hour shift (6am - 6pm, 6pm - 6am, or 3pm - 3am).
  • Good physical condition.
  • Must live or be willing to move within a 1-hour drive of Harrisonburg, VA.

Registration Process:
  1. Registration is required for testing and can be completed online by visiting the City's website (https://www.harrisonburgva.gov/employment).  All registration applications must be received through the City of Harrisonburg Human Resources Department's online application system no later than 5:00pm on Friday, September 6, 2019.  The online application system will automatically end registration at the indicated deadline and late registrations will not be accepted.
  2. After your registration has been received and reviewed by Human Resources, you will receive an email notification instructing you to complete an additional document, entitled "Pre-Screen Interview Guide."  Applicants must complete the document and submit it to Human Resources by 5:00pm on Monday, September 16, 2019.
  3. Applicant responses for the "Pre-Screen Interview Guide" will be reviewed by the Harrisonburg Police Department's Professional Standards Division. Candidates will be notified by 5:00pm on Wednesday, September 18, 2019 if they pass or fail the pre-screen review. Candidates who pass the pre-screen review will be formally invited via email to the testing on Saturday, September 21, 2019.
  4. Applicants who do not submit the completed document will not be allowed entry to the testing facility on Saturday, September 21, 2019.

Applicants currently certified as a Law Enforcement Officer through the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS), the Federal Government or another state are exempt from the written test.  Certified officers will receive further communication from Cpl. Chris Watson regarding the time of their scheduled physical ability test on Saturday, September 21, 2019.  Bring your current Law Enforcement Officer credentials to check-in.
