Police Officer (Certified)

The Poquoson Police Department is seeking qualified candidates for the position of full-time Police Officer.  Applications will be accepted in the City Manager’s Office, 500 City Hall Avenue until filled.  Starting salary is $53,414.00 - $58,755.00 (dependent upon qualifications/experience).  $2,000.00 Retention Award on completion of Probationary Period. Competitive benefit package to include:  VRS Retirement, Medical/Dental/Vision Insurance, Tuition Reimbursement Program, 457 Deferred Compensation Program, Take Home Vehicle Program, 12 Paid Holidays, 96 hrs. Sick Leave per year, and 96 hrs. Personal Leave per year.  
 

General Definition of Work

Performs protective service work involving a variety of general or support duty police assignments, and related work as apparent or assigned.  Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Sergeant.

Essential Functions

Issues summons or makes arrests as appropriate.

Responds to major crime calls (robbery, rape, murder, maiming, burglary, etc.) determines approach and attempts to identify and apprehend suspects.

Protects crime scene; preserves and collects evidence at the scene; takes fingerprints and photographs; interviews victims, witnesses, informants, and suspects; prepares reports on information collected.

Provides general public assistance to motorists and to citizens in a variety of noncriminal situations.

Performs traffic control for activities such as processions, ball games and accidents.

Testifies in court relative to investigations conducted; conducts or assists in conducting investigations; conducts legal searches and surveillance; confiscates property related to crimes.

Serves criminal warrants, subpoenas, and other court orders as required.

Arrests individuals violating laws or ordinances; writes accurate and complete reports of calls for service.

Attends annual classroom training, firearms training, seminars and conferences.

Operates equipment safely and reports unsafe work condition; may be required to be called back and report to work during emergency operations or conditions.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Some knowledge of police methods, practices and procedures; some knowledge of the geography of the City and location of important buildings; some knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Police Division; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to prepare clear reports; ability to deal professionally, courteously and fairly with the public; ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective and reasonable courses of action with due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances; skill in the use of firearms and the operation of police vehicles; ability to establish and maintain effective relationship with associates and the general public.

 

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Physical Requirements

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, frequently requires standing, walking, sitting, using hands to finger, handle or feel, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and reaching with hands and arms and occasionally requires climbing or balancing, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, using of measuring devices, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and occasionally requires exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

 

Special Requirements

Virginia Law Enforcement Certification.

Valid driver's license in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
