Under general direction of a sergeant, the Corporal performs a variety of general law enforcement duties. Work assignments typically require the incumbent to exercise independent judgment and action. The Corporal rank is distinguished from the Police Officer by the regular, ongoing assignments of one or more of the following: assignment as a team leader, assistant watch commander or patrol agent responsible for leading a shift and providing direction to officers in the field. The Corporal performs special assignments on a regular, ongoing basis including, but not limited to: Field Training Officer (FTO), investigator/detective, crime prevention specialist, and/or community relations specialist.

Required:

Ability to complete a successfully complete associated field training within one year of employment

Excellent working knowledge of local, state, and federal laws and ordinances

Ability to learn the rules and regulations of the CNU Police Department

Excellent ability to communicate orally and in writing and work effectively at all levels within and outside the University

Demonstrated ability to problem solve and work collaboratively with employees

Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage a variety of projects and to work independently

Adept at team building with strong leadership abilities

Ability to successfully function mentally and physically under stress and in emergency situations

Ability to identify crime patterns and trends and effectively establish initiatives that direct subordinates to assist in solving the problem

Ability to provide the highest levels of responsiveness and customer service to both internal and external customers

Must possess leadership and management skills and thorough knowledge applying progressive leadership and management principles, concepts, and tools

Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification Required

Education Required: Associate’s degree or higher, or 60 credits toward a degree; or high school diploma or equivalent with training, coursework, and relevant experience that equates to the degree or college credit requirement. Applicants must have current/active Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Basic Law Enforcement (BLE) certification, to include successful completion of DCJS-approved field training. Valid driver’s license with clear driving record.

Experience Required: Previous experience as a law enforcement officer.

Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification Preferred

Education Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree.
Graduate of law enforcement leadership training course or workshop.

Experience Preferred: Law enforcement experience in an institution of higher education. Previous experience in supervision and/or program oversight.
Previous experience in criminal investigations.
