Animal Control Officer
Description


Applications are now being accepted for an Animal Control Officer (ACO) position with the City of Fairfax Police Department.  Highly Qualified candidate(s) will be given an oral interview, a conditional job offer, a thorough background investigation, a polygraph examination, a psychological examination, and a physical examination.  After successful completion of the process, a final interview with the Chief of Police will be scheduled.

Examples Of Duties


Assigned to the Community Services Division.  Conducts routine patrol of the City; responds to citizen complaints about animals; captures and impounds stray or unlicensed animals; traps, captures, and relocates wildlife; investigates animal bites, cases of animal cruelty, neglect and abandonment and prepares relevant reports.   Cares for injured animals; enforces state and local animal laws and ordinances; issues warnings or citations to violators; obtains warrants and appears in court.  Assists citizens in locating lost pets; educates the public regarding animal laws, caring for pets, and wildlife dangers.  Performs all other duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications


Graduation from High School and two years of experience involving the handling of animals.  Must be a U.S. Citizen.  Ability to effectively deal with and communicate with the public.  Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.   Ability to work alone and exercise responsible judgment, especially in emergency situations.  Must be able to work outdoors and in inclement weather.   Knowledge of animal protection and control laws, the care and characteristics of domestic animals, and the hazards and safety practices involved in animal control work.  Two years of work experience involving the handling of animals is preferred.  Must possess a valid driver’s license with a good driving record.  

Conditions of employment include successful completion of a background investigation which includes drug history and a polygraph exam.  Must pass a physical exam by a City elected physician.  Although individuals with minimum qualifications may apply, those with the highest levels of job related experience, education and qualifications will receive favorable consideration.

Prefer: Certified Virginia Animal Protection Police Officers.  Ability to communicate effectively in a second language.


Supplemental Information

Hours: Monday – Sunday on a set rotation.  Subject to callout.
