About the Town
The Town of Surfside (pop. nearly 6,000) is located on a South Florida East Coast barrier island, with Miami Beach to the south and the Village of Bal Harbour to the north. Surfside is a small, attractive, beachfront community of approximately one square mile. The Public Safety Department
The Town of Surfside Public Safety Department is a 45-member department comprising 31 sworn and 14 non-sworn positions (Communication Operators, Parking Enforcement, Code Compliance and Administrative staff). The department is responsible for the enforcement of all local and state laws and the investigation of crimes within the Town limits.
The Chief of Police
The Chief of Police
under the general direction of the Town Manager, provides innovative administrative, management and leadership direction for the police department functions, operations and personnel through supervision of subordinate staff and review of their activities. The Chief of Police is responsible for preserving the peace of the Town, for commanding and directing the police force and ensuring that all of the provisions of the Code of Ordinances of the Town are strictly enforced.
The Town has a fiscal year 2021 budget of $29,926,295. The fiscal year 2021 Public Safety budget is $6,833,487 and $1,288,140 for the Parking Fund.
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate must be motivated, experienced, and a proactive individual who has the ability to cast vision and priorities for the department aligned with the Town’s objectives, one who will look out in the future and assist the Town in preparation for a better tomorrow.
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Criminology, Criminal Justice, Public Administration or related field and advance courses in managerial and leadership training such as FBI National Academy, Northwestern Command Course, Southern Police Institute Command Course, leadership and administration. The ideal candidate must be certified through the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission (CJSTC) and have a minimum of seven (7) years of experience as Chief of Police, Assistant Chief of Police, Captain or similar rank. A comparable amount of training, education or experience can be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
