About the Town
The Town of Colonial Beach, Virginia (pop. nearly 4,000) is a beachfront community located in the northwestern part of Westmoreland County on Virginia’s Northern Neck peninsula. It is bounded by the Potomac River, Monroe Bay and Monroe Creek and is home to the second-largest sandy beachfront in the state. Colonial Beach is located nearly equidistant from the Northern Virginia/Washington D.C. metropolitan area and the Richmond metro area. Easy access to I-95 and four-lane US 301 links travelers to all of Virginia and Maryland with direct access to Baltimore, Annapolis in addition to Washington D.C. Colonial Beach is less than a day’s drive from all major mid-Atlantic markets. It is an ideal place for those who want to enjoy big-city access in an engaging, small-town setting. The Public Safety Department
The Town of Colonial Beach Public Safety Department is a 14-member department comprised of 13 sworn and 1 non-sworn position (Administrative Assistant). The department is responsible for the enforcement of all the local and state laws and the investigation of crimes within the Town limits. 

The Chief of Police
The Chief of Police, under the general direction of the Town Manager and Town Council, provides innovative administrative management and leadership direction for the police department function, operations, and personnel through supervision of the subordinate staff and review of their activities. The Chief of Police is responsible for preserving the peace of the Town, for commanding and directing the police force and ensuring that all the provisions of the Code of Ordinances of the Town are strictly enforced. In addition, the Chief of Police must routinely work with and collaborate with the Westmoreland County Sheriff’s department and in cooperation with the Emergency Operations functions. 

The Budget
The Town has a fiscal year 2022 budget of $7,785,796. The fiscal year 2022 Police department budget is $1,276,000. 

The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate must be a motivated, experienced, and proactive individual who has the ability to cast vision and priorities for the department aligned with the Town’s objectives and be an effective communicator with the public. The ideal candidate will be a leader who will assure a professionally competent police force where individual officers are vested with good judgment and discretion in the discharge of their duties and are sensitive to all sectors of the community, and act in the best interest of the public's safety and enforcement of the law. 

Experience
The ideal candidate will have a combination of technical expertise, supervisory experience, a capacity to lead and inspire subordinates. The ideal candidate should have a bachelor’s degree with emphasis in the areas of criminal justice, law enforcement, and police administration. Certification by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services is required and it is anticipated that the ideal candidate will possess additional professional certificates, education, and qualifications. The ideal candidate must have a minimum of five (5) years of experience as Chief of Police, Assistant Chief of Police, Captain, Lieutenant, or other supervisory rank. A comparable amount of training, education or experience can be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

Salary
Budgeted salary is $75,000, but salary is negotiable based on DOQ/Experience. The Town of Colonial Beach participates in the Virginia Retirement System and offers an excellent benefits package to include Heath/Dental/Vision, paid sick and vacation.
