Police Officer- Lateral
The University of Richmond Police Department is presently one of only a handful of private institutions in the country that has a full-service law enforcement agency accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies and the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators. URPD is the first private institution and is currently the longest-running university law enforcement agency to be accredited by CALEA and shares this distinction with more than 600 municipal, state, and institutional police agencies nationwide. The University Police Department will be reaccredited by CALEA this year, 2022.

The University of Richmond Police Department is currently accepting applications for a full-time police officer position to provide law enforcement and crime prevention duties to include CLERY requirements for the University of Richmond within the University of Richmond Police Department.

Requirements

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Patrol/Crime Prevention/Community Policing

 

  • Protects the community and property of the University.
  • Patrols campus.
  • Responds to calls of service.
  • Provides safety and security services to the University Community.
  • Promotes positive community relationships in the performance of job duties.
  • Enforces University rules and regulations. 
  • Provides non-police-related services as needed. 
  • Willing to work overtime assignments when needed. 
  • The person in this position has been identified as a Campus Security Authority and Responsible Employee for Clery and Title IX purposes respectively, the employee will maintain current training and comply with the responsibilities of both titles.
Enforcement
  • Enforces VA Criminal and Traffic Laws. 
  • Makes arrests.
  • Testifies in court.
  • Enforces parking violations.
  • Provides mutual aid and assistance to other law enforcement agencies as requested. 
Investigations
  • Conducts criminal investigations, if assigned.
  • Collects and maintains evidence.
  • Writes reports.
  • Initiates administrative reporting process for student violations of University rules and regulations.
Training
  • Attends department training to maintain required police standards. 
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Police officers possess a level of fitness and general health to perform physical tasks encountered on the job. These activities may include, but are not limited to: climbing obstacles, running after suspects, running upstairs, jumping over obstacles, lifting heavy objects or persons, subduing persons resisting arrest, and physically pushing movable objects. Officers are physically able to perform the duties and functions of a sworn police officer, carry and use protective equipment, and perform in all weather conditions.

Respond, if requested or needed, on weekends and/or nights as a function of this position. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

To be considered as a police officer applicant with the University of Richmond Police Department for this hiring process, you must meet the following minimum qualifications:
  • Be a U. S. Citizen.
  • Be at least 21 years of age or older.
  • Be a high school graduate.
  • Possess or be able to obtain a valid Virginia Driver’s License.
  • Possess a driving history record that complies with the regulations required to operate a university motor vehicle.
  • Have not been convicted of a felony or serious misdemeanor or an offense involving moral turpitude.
  • Participate in the physical agility course
  • Able to perform the essential duties of a police officer
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
  • High School Diploma
  • Virginia Certified Law Enforcement Officer Preferred
  • The experience could change depending on the current need of the department
WORK HOURS:
  • Full-time, non-exempt position
  • 12-hour shift, during a 24-hour day, 40 hours weekly, 7 day period

SALARY STRUCTURE:
Pay Grade 4
