Salary & Benefits:  The starting salary for Police Officers is $59,077.33.  Police Officers who work between the hours of 6:00 PM and 6:00 AM will receive additional shift differential pay. Requirements

Minimum Qualifications - No Exceptions

All participants will undergo a rigorous background investigation including fingerprint-based criminal history records inquiries to both the Central Criminal Records Exchange and the Federal Bureau of Investigations to verify all information provided. 
 

  • Must be at least 21 years of age by the date of hire; 
  • Must be a United States Citizen;
  • Must have a high school diploma or passed the GED; 
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a valid driver’s license by date of employment; 
  • Must pass written and physical agility tests; 
  • Must pass near vision, color blindness, darkness perception, night vision, and peripheral vision tests; 
  • Must pass all pre-employment tests, including a polygraph, psychological assessment,
  • medical exam and drug screen; 
  • Must be a non-user of any tobacco products by the date of hire; 
  • Must be able to work 12.5-hour rotating shifts; and, 
  • Must sign an employment agreement contract if selected. 

Automatic Employment Disqualifiers

The Police Department retains the right to reject any applicant for any arrest and/or conviction that occurred at any age. 
 

  • Convicted of or pled guilty or no contest to a felony, domestic violence, or any offense that would be a felony if committed in Virginia; 
  • Convicted of or pled guilty to a crime of moral turpitude, such as lying under oath or falsifying any official documents; 
  • Conviction of any crime which carries a penalty of prohibiting the ownership, possession, or control of a firearm; 
  • Convicted of any Class 1 or 2 Criminal Misdemeanors as an adult, including DUI convictions; 
  • Misdemeanor conviction of any crime involving sex offenses and/or required to be registered on the Sex Offender Registry at any age; 
  • Under criminal investigation or have criminal charges pending; 
  • Associated with or supporting in any fashion any criminal gang, extremist-racist, Anti-Semitic group, or any group that has stated a desire to overthrow the United States Government; 
  • Convicted of more than one moving violation within the past 12 months, or more than two convictions within the last 24 months; 
  • Illicit use of any illegal, dangerous, or non-prescribed drugs or medication. However, occasional marijuana usage if more than one year prior to the date of application will be adjudicated on a case-by-case basis; 
  • Produced a positive result on a pre-employment drug screening; 
  • Failed to submit a fully complete, honestly reported background questionnaire or Personal History Statement (PHS); and, 
  • Any previous revocation or denial or certification as a Police Officer, receipt of either a dishonorable, undesirable, or bad conduct discharge, or a suspension of current certified status that will render them disqualified. 

Potential Employment Disqualifiers

The Police Department will consider applicants on a case-by-case basis if one or more of the following conditions apply:
 

  • Poor driving record; 
  • Poor credit history or debt linked to gambling; 
  • Commission of undetected crimes; 
  • Any behavior that calls into question the applicant’s ability to hold the public’s trust and respect to carry out the duties of a Police Officer.
