Chief of Police
The Town of Middleburg, a dynamic and historic small town in Loudoun County, Virginia, is recruiting for a Chief of Police. The Chief is responsible for overseeing public safety and law enforcement in the Town. The Chief reports directly to the Town Manager and works closely with the elected Town Council on matters of public safety. The Town Manager, elected officials, and Chief of Police have a strong and collaborative working relationship. The current Chief is retiring after a very successful 11-year tenure with Middleburg.
The Chief of Police serves on the Town’s leadership team and is responsible for key activities regarding protection of property, citizen safety, traffic control, major events, and enforcement of ordinances and laws. The Chief is expected to coordinate with other agencies, specifically the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, and to collaborate effectively with other agencies, businesses, educational facilities, and community groups.
The Police Department has 6 sworn positions (including the Chief) and one administrative assistant. The department’s annual budget, including salaries, is approximately $870,000.
Development of staff and adherence to General Orders is crucial in this role. The Town is proud of the experience and training of its officers and expects ongoing career and professional development to ensure that the department remains professional in all actions.
The Chief of Police position requires a high school diploma or GED, although a college degree is strongly preferred. Current certification as a law enforcement officer under the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services is required. Must maintain a valid driver’s license. All finalists will be subject to requisite background checks, credit checks, and employment history.
The Town offers a market competitive salary starting at $115,000, DOQ, as well as a full benefits package, including health insurance, vacation/sick leave, holidays, VRS retirement (with hazardous duty supplement), and more.
The Town anticipates a start date of
April 24, 2023.
