Police Major/Deputy Chief
Primary functions include:
  • Plan, organize, and direct day-to-day operational activities of the department. Review and coordinate activities of various shifts and maintain roster of special duty assignments.
  • Provide leadership and strategic guidance to department staff, including management of internal resources, program effectiveness/efficiency, goal setting and objectives, providing training and professional development opportunities.
  • Assists with developing, reviewing, and updating department policies and procedures to ensure the department is operating effectively, efficiently, and responsively to the needs of the community.
  • Manages projects to include oversight of internal and external activities dealing with various public service issues.
  • Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with internal departments throughout the Town, collaborating to achieve individual and joint goals to ensure that outcomes meet the needs of all stakeholders.
  • Engages in activities which promote the department within the community and the law enforcement profession.
  • Assists with preparing and administering the department budget.
  • Acts as Chief of Police when necessary.

Requirements Skills & Qualifications: Comprehensive knowledge of the laws and regulations relating to law enforcement administration; thorough knowledge of department rules and regulations; thorough knowledge of Town laws and ordinances; thorough knowledge of the geography of the Town and the location of important buildings; ability to assign, direct and supervise the work of subordinate staff; ability to deal with the public firmly and tactfully; ability to analyze complex police problems and to adopt quick and effective reasonable courses of action; skill in the use of firearms and the operation of a motor vehicle.

Education & Experience: Bachelor's degree in police science, criminal justice, or related field and extensive experience in police administration, including considerable supervisory experience. 

Although a Police Major is preferred, the Town reserves the right to under fill the position at the Police Captain level.
