Operations Technician (Full-Time)
The Waynesboro Police Department seeks a dedicated, self-motivated individual who values exceptional job performance, respect for all citizens, and desire to serve the community as a non-sworn Operations Technician. A college education is desired but not required. The starting salary is $37,500 or higher, depending on qualifications. Requirements GENERAL DEFINITION & CONDITIONS OF WORK:
  1. Performs intermediate technical work matching police and community resources to citizen needs: Entering, coding, reporting, filing, and researching police records in local and national databases. Does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of selected personnel in accordance with the Waynesboro Police Department Organizational Chart.
     
  2. This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, feeling and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, and determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work; the worker is subject to inside environmental conditions, and atmospheric conditions.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:
  1. Maintains NCIC/VCIN certification
  2. Makes computerized entries into the NCIC/VCIN in accordance with VCIN regulations and the code of Virginia.
  3. Conducts second-party checks on NCIC/VCIN entries made by other personnel.
  4. Conducts monthly validations on NCIC/VCIN entries as required.
  5. Assists with the VCIN audit preparation as required
  6. Proficiently operates the NCIC/VCIN system and has the ability to conduct queries and retrieve information pertinent to criminal justice purposes.
  7. Assists citizens with obtaining warrants through the video magistrate system.
  8. Assists citizens by matching law enforcement and community resources to their specific needs.
  9. Disseminates information pertinent to law enforcement activities in accordance with Waynesboro Police Department General Orders and the Code of Virginia.
  10. Answers telephone, provides information, and assists the public by matching law enforcement and community resources to their specific need.
  11. Transfers telephone calls to the appropriate department member or takes messages for them when required.
  12. Performs criminal history queries and logs all transactions as required.
  13. Assists in the preparation of periodic and special reports.
  14. Monitors a closed-circuit security video system.
  15. Works and corresponds closely with other departments and agencies and the courts.
  16. Controls access to the Police department via the main lobby through rigorous Identification of persons desiring entry and assures that all unauthorized personnel are escorted according to policy.
  17. Monitors, answers, and uses the police radio appropriately. 
  18. Performs related tasks, duties, and assignments as required.
  19. Supports the Chain of Command and actively works to control rumors and promote the morale and the welfare of the department.
  20. Processes payments for fines through the current cashiering database.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  1.  Specialized knowledge of the NCIC/VCIN system and all pertinent laws and regulations.
  2. General knowledge of modern record-keeping procedures and practices.
  3. General and specific knowledge of police forms, terminology, and records.
  4. General knowledge of Department programs, policies, and procedures.
  5. General knowledge of community resources and programs.
  6. Ability to perform a considerable volume of detailed and computerized record work.
  7. Ability to maintain files.
  8. Ability to type accurately and at a reasonable rate of speed.
  9. Ability to operate standard office and data entry equipment.
  10. Ability to follow written and oral directions.
  11. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, other agencies, the courts, and the public.
  12. Ability to maintain confidentiality.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
  1. Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.
  2. Some college-level coursework beyond the high school level is preferred.
