Responsibilities
- Direct and manage the work of staff within assigned divisions to ensure the protection of life and property at The Port of Virginia Community and its visitors.
- Direct and coordinate patrol activities, dispatch, training, facility security, credentialing, contract security, and criminal investigations.
- Oversee and coordinate the work of direct reports and contract security. Provide training, coaching, conflict resolution, mentorship, and discipline as needed in day-to-day operations.
- Assume the duties of the Police Chief if absent.
- Ensure operational efficiency and compliance with Port Security & Police policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Ensure departmental compliance with state and local laws and ordinances, federal regulations, and department policy and procedures.
- Oversee the recruitment and retention of a highly qualified workforce and provide workforce development opportunities through ongoing feedback.
- Conduct and complete extensive and complex internal investigations, ensuring that procedural guarantees for law enforcement are upheld anytime an officer faces punitive action, termination, transfer, suspension, etc.
- Oversee departmental budget analysis, planning, and procurement.
- Develop, revise, and implement police policies that govern daily actions.
- Oversee the management of police assets, such as fleet vehicles, weapons, uniforms, equipment, and more.
- Attend meetings and liaison with local, state, and federal partners and programs. Discuss best practices and current and ongoing issues. Partners include the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police, United States Coast Guard, United States Customs and Border Protection, and local, state, and federal law enforcement partners.
- Ensures public records and information are managed, maintained, and disposed in accordance to the Library of Virginia retention and disposition schedules and the Virginia Port Authority records management policies and procedures.
- Ensures compliance with all security and environmental regulations and policies within work area at all times. This includes properly addressing issues through action or reporting matter and concerns to Manager.
- Other task and assignments as directed.
Qualifications
- Associate’s degree required.
- Law Enforcement Certification by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services required.
- At least three (3) years of experience as a Police Lieutenant required.
