Chief of Police
Serves as chief law enforcement officer for the Town of Bedford (population 7,500 and growing), which is located in the Central Virginia area between Roanoke and Lynchburg.
The department has 24 sworn officers and 3 non-sworn personnel. Responsibilities include managing all activities of the department. The Police Department values respect, cooperation, and community involvement. The next Chief will uphold these values, maintain high professional standards, and engage with the community. The ideal candidate will be an innovative thinker with managerial experience in law enforcement, strong interpersonal skills, and a commitment to customer service.
The ideal candidate will be an experienced, progressive law enforcement professional who has the skills and capacity for collaborative leadership, employee development and community partnerships. Candidates should demonstrate proven success in a comparable community with a commitment to equity and inclusion; a strong grasp of municipal law enforcement methods; ability to develop positive relationships with various stakeholders; exceptional communication skills and an ability to inspire public trust; skills in negotiation and consensus building; excellent financial management skills and knowledge of capital planning; and familiarity with the Town of Bedford Charter and all applicable provisions of the Town Code. The next Chief is expected to serve as a respected mentor who has the ability to develop high-quality personnel; demonstrate an ability to attract and retain a diverse staff; act as a strategic thinker open to new approaches and technologies; and demonstrate a high level of honesty and integrity. |

Requirements |
The position requires either a bachelor’s degree from a fully accredited institution of higher learning in law enforcement, public or business administration, or a related field. Possession of a master’s degree is a plus. A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience in a command level/management capacity is strongly preferred. Experience with CALEA certification is important. Grant writing and administration skills are highly valued. Completion of an executive level law enforcement leadership course, such as the FBI National Academy, PERF’s Senior Management Institute in Policing, VACP Professional Executive Leadership School, or similar course is preferred. The Chief will be expected to establish residence which provides availability to the community at all hours. Must have or be able to obtain a Virginia driver’s license within 30 days and possess or have the ability to obtain Virginia law enforcement certification as outlined by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services. Must meet physical requirements as well as participate in drug screening and psychological examination.
