- Ability to apprehend offenders and participate in subsequent court proceedings.
- Ability to enforce criminal and traffic laws.
- Ability to prepare complete and thorough case files, reports, and paperwork.
- Able to conduct a thorough investigation, and traffic enforcement of all offenses and incidents.
- Ability to maintain weapons and equipment in functional and presentable condition.
- Ability to respond to situations brought to the officer’s attention during patrol or when assigned by radio.
- Ability to express ideas and communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Able to successfully re-certify as a law enforcement officer every two years.
- Ability to properly testify in court.
- Ability to work well in both independent and team-related assignments.
- Ability to solve complex problems.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- Complete the basic law enforcement academy and state board exam.
- Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to graduation from high school or a general education diploma
- Possession of a valid Virginia driver’s license
- Complete the annual firearm certification
- Successful completion of Law Enforcement re-certification every two years
