City of Lynchburg Announces Kennith R. Edwards, Jr. as Chief of Police

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The City of Lynchburg has selected Kennith R. Edwards, Jr. as its next Chief of Police following a comprehensive national recruitment and selection process. 

Chief Edwards has served the City of Lynchburg for nearly three decades and most recently as Interim Chief of Police. His career includes leadership roles overseeing Field Operations, Investigations, Administration, and multiple specialized divisions. He brings extensive experience in organizational leadership, community engagement, officer development, and public safety operations. 

The selection process attracted applicants from across the country and included multiple interview phases, leadership assessments, and input from sworn and professional staff, city leadership, regional law enforcement, and community stakeholders. 

“Chief Edwards has demonstrated steady, principled leadership and a deep commitment to this community throughout his career,” said City Manager Wynter C. Benda.  “He is widely respected by our officers, staff, and community partners, and his calm demeanor, servant-leader mindset, and genuine approach to community relationships stood out throughout the process.” 

Committee members cited Chief Edwards’ strong and caring leadership style, deep knowledge of the Lynchburg community, and role in helping shape the department into what it is today. 

Chief Edwards is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and the Police Executive Research Forum’s Senior Management Institute for Police, and has completed executive leadership training through the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police. His leadership philosophy emphasizes service, transparency, accountability, and evidence-based, community-focused policing. 

“I am honored to continue serving the Lynchburg community as Chief of Police,” Edwards said. “This department is filled with dedicated professionals, and I look forward to continuing our work together to strengthen trust, enhance public safety, and support the quality of life in our city.” 

Chief Edwards will officially begin his role as Chief on Wednesday, January 28th.  In the coming weeks, he will participate in onboarding meetings, department briefings, and opportunities to engage with community partners. 

The City thanks the members of the Police Department and the community who participated in the selection process and extends appreciation to Chief Edwards for his service as Interim Chief during the transition.
