VACP Recommends Shrouding of Badges for Appomattox County Sheriff's Deputy Burlie W. Duvall III

The Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police recommends that all Virginia law enforcement officers shroud their badges in honor of Appomattox County Sheriff's Deputy Burlie W. Duvall III who lost his life in the line of duty on Thursday, August 6, 2026.

Shrouding is recommended through the day of funeral services, Saturday, August 15, 2026. 

The VACP expresses our sincerest condolences to Appomattox County Sheriff Robert Richardson and to the family, friends and colleagues of the fallen deputy. Our prayers are with them at this most difficult time.

APPOMATTOX COUNTY, Va. (WSET) — The Appomattox County Sheriff's Office is mourning the loss of one of its own after he was killed in the line of duty on Thursday.

The sheriff's office announced on Friday, August 7, that Deputy Burlie W. Duvall III was tragically killed while assisting at the scene of a crash.

The sheriff's office said circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation, and no further information will be released at this time out of respect for his family.

Deputy Burlie W. Duvall III dedicated his life to protecting this community, and he gave that life while serving others," the sheriff's office wrote. "His courage, selflessness, and commitment to duty will never be forgotten.

The sheriff's office asked that everyone keep Deputy Duvall's family, as well as his coworkers and all those affected by the tragedy, in their thoughts and prayers.

The sheriff's office thanked the law enforcement agencies, fire and EMS personnel, emergency dispatchers and members of the community who have offered their support so far.

"Deputy Duvall's sacrifice will never be forgotten," the office wrote. "His service, dedication, and commitment to the citizens of Appomattox County will forever remain a part of the legacy of this sheriff's office."

Information regarding funeral arrangements and opportunities for the public to pay their respects will be released at a later date.

Appomattox County mourns as procession brings fallen deputy home

APPOMATTOX COUNTY, Va. (WSET) — An Appomattox County community is mourning the loss of one of its own deputies as a procession brought him home following a deadly crash on Route 460.

A procession from Roanoke to Robinson Funeral Home brought Deputy Burlie Duval III back to Appomattox Friday night.

Deputy Davis, 33, was killed after stopping to help others involved in an eight-vehicle crash Thursday evening in Campbell County.

Duvall and another deputy were heading home from the training academy when they came upon the crash on Route 460 near Cabin Field Road, according to Virginia State Police.

Investigators said the deputies stopped to help and parked their vehicles on the side of the road with their emergency lights activated.

Police said an approaching tractor-trailer swerved to avoid the vehicles and struck Duvall. He died at the scene.

Seven other people were taken to the hospital.

As Appomattox County mourns Duvall’s death, those who knew him are remembering a man dedicated to helping others.

Duvall’s friend and former coworker, Elliot Clifton, said the circumstances surrounding his death reflected the person he was.

“This is who he is. He had turned to help somebody else, and that’s how he met his demise, helping somebody else," Clifton said. "That’s all he was about: serving others. No matter what capacity, no matter what it meant for him."

Appomattox Sheriff Robert Richardson said Duvall’s courage, selflessness and commitment to duty will never be forgotten.

"We ask everyone to keep Deputy Duvall's family, our sheriff's office family, and all those affected by this tragedy in your thoughts and prayers as we navigate the difficult days ahead," said Richardson.

Duvall leaves behind his wife and three children.

The crash shut down both lanes of Route 460 for about 10 hours before the highway reopened early Friday morning.

Virginia State Police said the investigation remains ongoing.

Officials said funeral arrangements and additional information will be released as they become available.
