July is Vehicle Theft Prevention Month

Traffic Safety,

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that more than 850,000 vehicles were stolen in the United States in 2024, primarily due to driver errors such as leaving cars unlocked or windows open. To help protect vehicles, the Virginia DMV aims to collaborate with partners to share resources and reduce vehicle thefts across the Commonwealth.

Remind your communities to:

  • Take your  vehicle's key with you; do not leave it in or on your  vehicle.
  • Always close and lock all windows and doors when you park.
  • Whenever possible, park in well-lit areas.
  • Never leave valuables in your  vehicle, especially if they are visible from outside.

We thank you for your dedication and efforts in keeping Virginia’s roads safe. We encourage our partners to share the resources below on their agency’s or organization’s social media accounts.
