After a nationwide search, a seasoned law enforcement professional with well-established roots in Northern Virginia will become the Town of Vienna’s next Deputy Police Chief. David Huchler brings with him 34 years of law enforcement experience with the Alexandria Police Department and the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police Department. His service with the Town of Vienna will begin on April 6, 2026.

“David Huchler is well qualified to serve in a public safety leadership role, and we are looking forward to welcoming him into the ranks of the Vienna Police Department,” said recently appointed Police Chief Dan Janickey. “His well-established record of excellence, his experience, and his work with regional partners will help our department to continue to evolve to meet the needs of our growing community.”

Huchler’s law enforcement career began in 1991 as a patrol officer for the Alexandria Police Department. Over the years he rose through the ranks serving in progressively more responsible jobs in wide variety of public safety disciplines including investigations, internal affairs, strategic response, crisis intervention, community policing, and policy. He retired as Deputy Chief of the Alexandria Police Department in April 2018 to accept the position of Chief of Police with the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police Department, where he served until January 2026.

The Vienna Police Department Deputy Chief position became open in February 2026 when Dan Janickey was promoted to Police Chief. As the town’s new second-in-command leader, Huchler will pick up where Janickey left off and manage the day-to-day internal operations of the department, while Janickey focuses on policy, long-range planning, external partnerships and community relations.
